GENERAL HISTORY OF DOGS.

There is no incongruity in the idea that in the very earliest period of man’s habitation of this world he made a friend and companion of some sort of aboriginal representative of our modern dog, and that in return for its aid in protecting him from wilder animals, and in guarding his sheep and goats, he gave it a share of his food, a corner in his dwelling, and grew to trust it and care for it.

Probably the animal was originally little else than an unusually gentle jackal, or an ailing wolf driven by its companions from the wild marauding pack to seek shelter in alien surroundings. One can well conceive the possibility of the partnership beginning in the circumstance of some helpless whelps being brought home by the early hunters to be tended and reared by the women and children. Dogs introduced into the home as playthings for the children would grow to regard themselves, and be regarded, as members of the family    Continue reading

Dog Trainer Corner: safe walking in town without a leash.

How quickly we can teach our dog to walk at heel in street traffic?

Some dog owners could say this is impossible to do with their dogs. This is not true. We can do it with any dog of any age within one month. Of course we have to fulfill some conditions. The most important condition is not systematic but SATISFACTION. People usually have this feeling if their dogs are well turned-out, obedient or more agile compared to other dogs. The first incentive is the most common but not permanent, but the second one is more durable, stable and long-lasting. Dogs are very empathic animals and the thing they most desire is our SATISFACTION. When they sense this, they work better. Now, lets start. Continue reading

The serious matter – Choosing the dog, part 2.

The detailed tips on how to choose the right dog.

Following the previously mentioned issues, I would like to elaborate now the topic of factors which need to be considered while righ decision making process in regard to owning dog.

1) Purchase or adoption? Personally I’m familiar with the dilemma, being aware of a huge numbers of dogs left in shelters. Would be perfect to have an opportunity to provide a home for all of them. However the reality of fostering faces certain circumstances. The past-life trauma seems to be predominant problem in older dogs’ behaviour. I believe that fostering is a proper option for responsible people, already experienced and with knowledge of how to quickly adapt pet to to new conditions. Continue reading

First of all, the future owner must be aware that decision of having dog is a long term obligation, and may be based on the spiritual or emotional grounds, but must also concern the economic one. Visiting a vet or a groomer

Some people are convinced that dogs fear things by nature the same as they always bark on a postman._dsc0056-edit Nothing could be more mistaken. All these behaviours come from the smell of the certain place or person which dogs can sense and interpret. I was assisting the dog owners in their vet visit and observed their mistakes. Dogs were quite often paralysed by fear or fear was triggering aggression in them. I have seen dogs peeing or pooping from fear on the floor while waiting for a vet in waiting area.

All these places such as vet office or groomer room have specific smell that mainly consists of disinfectants. This type of scent is for every dog very stressful. It can be compared to our visit to a dentist and our fear associated with a tooth ache.

What do we need to know if we want to learn a puppy or adult dog correct behaviour.

Dogs do not think or understand the same way as we do. The dog’s process of learning consists of a reaction to stimuli impacting the senses thus formulating impulses, associations and habits. If we understand this process we will be able to teach our dog more effectively and at the same time we will develop strong bonds with our dog.
Impulses and stimuli are the key to understand the purpose of a dog’s life. Stimuli can be SONY DSCpositive or negative, motivating or demotivating. Stimulus is a detectable change in the internal or external environment, which influences or causes a temporary increase of physiological and physical activity or response in the whole organism or in any of its parts.

How to teach a puppy do not pee or poop indoors in a quick and effective way.

I do realise that for many dog owners it might be difficult to train their puppy to pee and poop outdoors, and develop a habit of doing it. This is a reason why I decided to discuss it further. This topic is broad and it needs to be divided into two parts.

Before giving you some advises, I need to explain how canine’s nature impacts its img_0424behaviour. The below example will help us to understand the basics of canine’s nature:
• When we do something repeatedly we develop a habit after weeks but this habit turns into pure happiness after years. A good example of this can be brushing teeth or washing hands in human’s world, in dogs’ licking paws, groin, barking and playing with toys
• If we are happy and satisfied, dogs will gladly cooperate with us
• Dogs are the most empathetic animals leaving among us – they feel our emotions, they read us like an open book, and it is hard to mislead them
• Dogs need a strong and self-confident leader
